Report from the 2019
Scottish Gathering of Enterprise Architect Users
Held in Livingston on Thursday 6th June 2019
Written by Gillian Adens, Director at Hippo Software
In June 2019 Hippo Software hosted a gathering of EA users in Scotland. Thirty-two delegates from sixteen different organisations signed up to attend this event. This included delegates travelling from as far away as Bristol, Wolverhampton, London, Ireland, Wales and The Netherlands as well as lots of delegates travelling from throughout Scotland, coming from Livingston, Kirkcaldy, Glenrothes, Edinburgh, Hamilton, Glasgow and Barrhead. In addition we were joined by Sparx Systems representatives travelling all the way from Australia and India. Delegates thoroughly enjoyed a friendly and interactive event – and were able to share ideas and innovations.
Architecture by Stealth!
Our first presentation was delivered by John Loughlin, Enterprise Architect at East Renfrewshire Council.
John shared the journey taken by East Renfrewshire Council in their adoption of Sparx EA, initially for business process modelling and more recently for enterprise architecture. He described his own influence at the Council by establishing a design authority and tool governance group and creating a capability reference model.
John described the nature of projects and how the team established Excel templates to encourage the capture of architecture artifacts and automate their import into Sparx EA catalogues. This allowed the team to create as-is viewpoints for sharing. The Council is now building ArchiMate viewpoints to articulate future project plans and transition architectures, and well as importing project requirements and establishing traceability.
Security Architecture Using Sparx EA
Our next presentation was delivered by Joseph Rose, Senior Solutions Architect at London Stock Exchange Group.
Joe provided a presentation on security architecture and modelling within Sparx EA. He explained the motivation for security architecture and its increasing importance within our industry. He explored the different types of threats that need to be considered and showed how Sparx EA can be used to capture controls, countermeasures, policies and security requirements plus highlight areas of vulnerability within the IT environment.
Joe suggested building threat models using malicious ‘red’ actors to represent potential attacks and creating attack trees with malicious user stories highlighting the need for points of extra vigilance. Joe also demonstrated the use of ArchiMate notation to represent security drivers and goals as well as creating a security capability heat map.
Demonstration of Prolaborate
Our final speaker of the morning was Nizam Mohamed, Prolaborate Consultant from Sparx Systems.
Nizam provided an introduction to Prolaborate and explained how it can be used to present just the right amount of relevant information to different groups of stakeholders. He demonstrated the custom dashboard mechanisms that provide summary information to business and management stakeholders and showed how all reports were driven from data extracted directly for EA models. Nizam also explained the support Prolaborate offers for performing impact analysis and conducting reviews.
New Features in Enterprise Architect V15
After lunch our final presentation was delivered by Tom O’Reilly, Chief Operations Officer from Sparx Systems.
Tom provided a presentation on significant new features in the beta of EA V15. He covered topics such as custom diagram style, the new diagram matrix view, improved diagram look & feel, new element and diagram tabs on the browser, new hot keys, fast model transfer, custom tables to store information in a grid format, the ability to assign perspectives to a security group and data miner features.
Mini Tutorials and Knowledge Sharing Sessions
We had three separate short tutorial sessions:
of EA Simulation
to Declutter EA
In the afternoon delegates could select and attend 2 out of 3 mini-tutorial sessions. Feedback was very positive and all delegates reported learning something new and useful!
